CELEBRATING EUROPEAN ANTHEMS

CELEBRATING EUROPEAN ANTHEMS
About the project
Our project Celebrating European anthems is a common project to celebrate the European Day of Languages by learning about European hymns.
The students will get to know the meaning of the European hymns by listening to students of the project sing their national anthem in their language. They will make a short video of their performance, so that other participants of the project can watch it and use it. They will translate the text in English and make subtitles for the videos, so that they can analyse it during the lesson. We will celebrate the European Day of Languages by watching all the videos of the performances, reading the texts in English and then by exploring the meaning of the anthems (similarities and differences in the common European learning environment) and broaden their knowledge about the European culture and anthems. Drawings or mindmaps will be created and shared in the Twinspace of the project.
Key words: European Day of Languages, European hymns, celebration.
AIMS
Students
- will learn new vocabulary or broaden their knowledge in foreign languages,
- will celebrate the European Day of Languages by learning about the European common culture (anthems) and different languages and by celebrating with other European peers,
- some of them will take part of an international and eTwinnning project for the first time, so they will get to know all the phases of participating in an European project,
- will get to know and consider their peers’ ideas about the same topic and use them to collaborate on a shared task,
- will get to know how to share collaboratively some aspects of the culture that are common in Europe or similar and different in other countries’ environments,

All partners will update the materials in the Twinspace of the project and present the project activities and goals to their students. The celebration of the European Day of Languages, so the communication among partners will be regular and frequent in September. Students will take an active part in all the activities. Also, we will consider their opinions about the whole project.
The agenda of planned activities:
September 2017: The students sing their national anthem and make a short video of their performance and then post it in the Twinspace. The students translate their anthem in English and post the English and original version in the Twinspace. They can also make subtitles for the videos.
26th of September: Students watch all the anthems (or even sing them) and read the texts. Students think about the meaning of the anthems and create mindmaps or drawings and share them.

Card Games with ESL Class

Go Fish is a popular choice and one of the card games you can adapt to suit many different grammar points. To make the game more adaptable, simply use cards with verbs in their base form (eat, drink, buy, live). Have two sets of verb cards, so you have two of each verb. You can play the game in pairs or in small groups. Each student is dealt five to seven cards (the remaining cards are placed in a stack at the center) and has to ask a question in the correct grammar tense in order to find the pair. So, if you’re practicing questions with ever, and Student A has a card with the verb be, he/she asks, “Have you ever been to ….?” If student B has the card with the verb be, he/she must say, “Yes, I have” and hand it over. If not, he/she says, “No, I haven’t! Go fish!”, thus prompting Student A to take a card from the stack of remaining cards. For another great spin on the Go Fish card game, check out this worksheet.
